What would have happened if Napoleon and his army had won the Battle of Waterloo and continued to fight and conquer Europe?
In doing research about Napoleon and his goals and the different areas he was planning on fighting for next, it is easy to see that Napoleon would have kept going if he had not been defeated by the British forces at Waterloo. Napoleons goal as a leader was to conquer all of Europe in order to unify it into one country although I could not really find exactly why without super extensive research, my though is that it was partly as a statement of power for him to able to say that he had conquered all of Europe and now ruled it, and partly to keep peace, which would be easier if it was one unified country as opposed to the divided countries that had pretty much taken turns fighting for a long time.
Its a fairly well known fact that in 1815 Napoleon was defeated in what is now Belgium at the Battle of Waterloo but if he had won he definitely would have kept going. Next in his plan was to go to conquer Brussels and continue towards Russia and Germany. Chances are he would have made it as far as Russia, however, based on research and of course historic proof, he would not have made it much farther. At each battle Napoleon was losing more and more soldiers and the Russians and the Austrians had very large armies prepared to meet him if he were to make it that far. This means he would have only fought a few more weeks or months past Waterloo depending on how long each battle in between took.
For my Alternate History Image Assignment I used to canva.com and layered the well known painting of Napoleon on his horse onto a painting of Brussels to show what his next step would have looked like if he had not been defeated at Waterloo.
If this had actually happened, even though Napoleon probably still would have been defeated later, chances are things would be different today, for example all territories between France and Russia may have a bit more of a french influence and culture than they do today.Unfortunately we will never know, considering shortly after his defeat, Napoleon was exiled and died, meaning he never had the chance to try again. Although his defeat did bring about an era of peace in Europe that lasted for a long time.
