The Film

The film Saving Private Ryan was released in 1998 from director Steven Spielberg and starred a large handful of big names in Hollywood including, but not limited to, Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon, and Tom Sizemore. The movie is loosely based on a true story from World War II about four brothers who joined the armed forces, their service and sacrifice led the government to create the Sole Survivor Policy in 1948, preventing family members of soldiers who have lost someone to the service already, from being drafted. The movie follows Tom Hanks’ character, John Miller, and the unit he compounded out of survivors from the storming of Omaha beach in Normandy, as they travel through various battlefields in France with the orders to find and save Private James Ryan so he could return home, as his brothers had been killed making him the only son. It focuses on the emotions and events that the unit experiences only for Private Ryan to refuse their help in favor of staying with his brothers in arms and ask them to stay with his unit and help to fight before he could return home, getting more men, including Miller, killed in the process. Overall the film won 5 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes on top of a host of nominations and wins of various other awards.
